It is amazing the impression twins make on people sometimes. I had to blog about it because the following conversations usually come up 3-4 times a month. At least. Sometimes I know the people (or at least recognize them), other times I have no idea.
My twin sister Lauren and I came to Weber State together after high school. She was here for 3 semesters before she transferred to BYU-Idaho. I went on to complete another 5 semesters, and have lived here an additional 4 years since I graduated. Yet when I run into people from the past, the conversations are always nearly identical.
Hi. I think we used to go to school/church together?
Do you have a twin?
Did you guys run track?
Yeah, I remember you.
I even ran into someone the other day and had this conversation:
Hi. Is your last name Dalton? Or was it?
I think we used to go to church together.
You had a twin, right?
And you guys ran track?
Let me take a shot in the dark, are you Lesley? and your sister was Lauren?
Are you kidding me? Yes, I recognized this kid and his wife, but if I had to place a name it would have been impossible. Sometimes I feel awful when I don't even recognize someone.
Running twins must stick out. Sometimes it makes you feel famous. When I had Ada in the hospital, my CNA recognized me and we had this conversation. What is most weird it that very rarely does someone recognize me without mention of a twin (even though I have lived here a lot longer without a twin).
Now that Lauren and I live in different places, funny things still happen. I have had people I don't know come up and give me hugs and ask me how I am doing, and then I have to explain that they must know my sister. Once I was in Costco, and I guess one of Brian's uncles (Lauren's husband) saw me. I didn't recognize him, but he obviously thought Lauren was giving him the cold shoulder, and he was even more confused to see her with someone besides Brian (because I was with Cameron). He even called Brian's mom and asked her what was going on. We all had to laugh at that mix up.
Maybe someday Lauren and I will live close to each other again, but it probably isn't going to happen any time soon. I have always loved being a twin, and while I don't know how my mom did it, sometimes I wish every kid could have a best friend to grow up with.
